Peso Pluma was born in Zapopan, Jalisco, to a family with roots in both Sinaloa (on his mother’s side) and Guadalajara with partial Lebanese ancestry through his father. Though he was raised in Guadalajara, from age 15 he taught himself to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorials.
As a teenager he started writing songs in a diary — a form of emotional therapy, he has said — even though peers sometimes ridiculed him for it.
During his adolescence, he spent some time in the U.S., studying in the San Antonio, Texas area (Corbett Junior High and later Clemens High School), where he also immersed himself in English and the hip-hop and urban music that would influence his style.
Peso Pluma is widely regarded as a leading figure in corridos tumbados, a genre that fuses the traditional elements of Mexican corridos with contemporary urban influences such as Latin trap, hip-hop, and reggaetón — a sound that bridges generations and cultures.
This blending of norteño/corrido roots with modern beats and lyrical themes has helped him cross over from regional Mexican music into global Latin and mainstream charts. Rise to Fame & Career Breakthrough
Although he began releasing music around 2020, his rise to global fame accelerated dramatically in 2022 with hits like El Belicón, a collaboration that resonated widely across social media and streaming platforms.
In 2023, Peso Pluma achieved international prominence with major chart-topping collaborations such as Ella Baila Sola (with Eslabon Armado) and La Bebé (Remix) (with Yng Lvcas). These songs broke barriers for regional Mexican music in global markets.
By blending traditional Mexican regional roots with modern Latin urban styles, Peso Pluma has helped propel corridos tumbados from local scenes into mainstream Latin music worldwide.
Today, Peso Pluma stands as one of the most streamed and influential Mexican artists globally. He has revived and redefined regional Mexican music for a new generation — bridging old-school corrido tradition with modern global urban sounds. His success has opened doors for other artists working in corridos, trap, and cross-genre Latin music.
